Buying Land for Women

Maasai Women’s Empowerment and Collective Land Acquisition

The problem and the solution

In traditional Maasai culture, women own no material possessions. When their husbands die, if they have no sons of age to support them, they are left alone, often in precarious situations, with no possibility of remarrying. Polygamy is common, and many women are given in marriage to men older than themselves, increasing the risk of being widowed at a young age.

Faced with these profound inequalities, Maasai women, particularly widows and young women wishing to emancipate themselves, need secure access to land and the means to provide for themselves and their children.

Project goals

The aim of this project is to create collective lands, managed by the association, on which Maasai women can develop economic, educational and agricultural projects. These lands will serve as a basis for their empowerment, offering them the opportunity to cultivate, produce resources and build a future for themselves and their families.

The solution: collective land and empowerment projects

We plan to acquire land that will be allocated to groups of Maasai women. They will be able to develop several types of project:

  • Permaculture and sustainable agriculture: The establishment of collective vegetable gardens and agricultural systems based on permaculture, enabling the women to produce their own food autonomously and sustainably.
  • Low-tech projects to improve daily life: Women will benefit from training in low-tech technologies (such as solar cookers, water filtration systems) to make their daily lives easier while respecting the environment.
  • Education and training: The land will also serve as a center for providing women and their children with training in management, agriculture, handicrafts and more, giving them the tools for economic emancipation. This will help break the cycle of generational inequality.

Impacts and benefits

  • Collective land ownership: For the first time, Maasai women, traditionally deprived of any property rights, will have access to secure land on which to build their future.
  • Improved living conditions: agricultural and low-tech projects will enable women to meet their families’ food requirements, while generating income.
  • Strengthening the status of women: This project aims to change social dynamics by giving Maasai women real economic and social power within their community.

How can you get involved ?

We need your support to finance the acquisition of land and the implementation of these empowerment projects. Your contribution will enable Maasai women to regain their dignity, secure their future and transform their lives.
